B) Representation

RICHARD DYER

"How we are seen determines how we are treated.  How we treat others is based on how we seem them.  How we see them comes from representation" (The Matter of Images)

DAVID CHANDLER

Representation always involved 'the construction of reality'.

LAURA MULVEY

Argues that cinema positions the audience as male. The camera gazes at the female object on screen.  It also frames the male character watching the female.

  • We watch the girl; we see the male watching the girl; we position ourselves within the text as a male objectively gazing at the female.
  • Can be applied to other media forms also.

Example Representation Essay

There are many different forms that representation can take through the media, that re-present particular social groups in particular ways, through mediation and most often, through stereotypes.  In my advanced portfolio, I created my own representation of particular groups through the use of a theatrical trailer, representing them in a way that would have appeal to my target audience of 16 to 24 year old females, from a suburban town, close to London.
