A) Using Conventions in Real Media Texts

Mainly make sure to talk about how you developed your understanding of the use of conventions in real media texts and you went from foundation portfolio to advanced.  Emphasise how you realise the importance of conventions in your advanced portfolio, due to the amount of research you conducted.  Don't be afraid to criticise your work!

Focus on 2 or 3 conventions that you chose to focus on in each of your portfolios, making sure that you reference how they developed over time.  Make sure also to explain how conventions are useful and understanding them is key in creating a conventional and stereotypical media text.  Again, emphasise how this developed over time.

Magazines for the foundation portfolio.
- Reference to specific magazines (Q + NME), genres, performers, history of music video, camerawork, editing, narrative, miss-en-scene, lighting, music etc subversion or adherence to conventions

Trailers for the advanced portfolio.
- Reference to specific films, directors, actors, film noir, jeopardy and suspense, camerawork, editing, narrative, miss-en-scene, lighting, music etc subversion or adherence to conventions.

In what ways were media conventions adhered to?  For example did the trailer have fast paced editing or slow paced?  Did the performers act to the camera? What media theories were utilised?  Were the representations involved appropriate to the product?

Questions to Answer:

  1. In what ways have your productions used or developed conventions adopted from real media products?
  2. In what ways have your productions challenged or played with conventions adopted from real media products?
  3. In other words, is your work generic, experimental, or both?
  4. Some media producers adopt a style of working that is quite distinctive - explore how the work you have produced may have been influenced by your own favourite producers/ directors/ designers/ publishers.  Do you have a 'style'?
