Q: Analyse media representation in one of your coursework productions.
Through the use of media representation, an audience is being shown aspects of reality, which can be shown through aspects such as visuals and/or narrative theory. The idea of media representation can be shown through the use of speech or writing as well as still or moving images. There are many different ways that media representation can be used in various forms of media in order to entice audiences and get them interested in a product and it can also be a way to make your product have a greater sense of verisimilitude.
In my advanced portfolio that I am currently in the process of creating and piecing together my own film trailer, I have looked at various forms of media representation as I think that for my own trailer (seeing as it's drama), I need to base a lot of the themes that I am going to include on real life issues so that I can represent real people and issues that be affecting some of the target audience or the general people that are going to be watching the trailer.

Question 1a) - 6th December 2013
Q: Describe how you developed research and planning skills for media production and evaluate how these skills contributed to creative decision making. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how these skills developed over time.
Over the past two years I have developed my research and planning skills in order to make creative and informative decisions based on the media product that I would be making. I have used various techniques that have allowed me to develop the process over a long period of time. All aspects of the research and planning that I have done, contributing to my final pieces of work have helped me greatly in understanding the vital factors that I need to include in my wok to make it suitable for the target audiences that I would be aiming my product at.
For my foundation portfolio in my AS year, a lot of research went into the overall design of the magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread, so that I could relate it to the best of my ability to some of the music magazines that were already out there. I new that I would have to look a lot into aspects such as colour schemes, layout, fonts and texts and various languages that I would have to imply into my work. I had to make sure that it all fit together in an interesting and unique way. In order to make the majority of these creative decisions I would have to have completed some research in the field, to make sure that I knew what sort of themes I would need to use. This particular research skill that I have gained whilst finding out information regarding these factors, has developed over a long period of time, as I began to research further into the creative side of music magazines. These factors are the same when it came to planning. I knew that when it came to planning how I as going to put together my magazine, I would have to have a good understanding of how to plan, which is why there was a lot of trial and error involved when it came to planning and piecing together my magazine. Planning aspects such as skeleton layouts, meant that I could have a basic idea of what I was going to do whilst also having a lot of control over the things that I could change. Despite this, the planning stages of my magazine contributed to the creative decision making involved in the production as the rough idea of what I was going to do allowed me to use the research that I had gathered, looking at the preferences of my target audience, and influence the various aspects of my magazine in different ways. I think that both the research and planning side of this particular media production, allowed me to let my creativeness come through whilst also sticking to what the target audience is looking for. I also think that the skills that I gained whilst creating and researching this area of the media has helped me for future reference if I ever need to create something similar again. This is important because it will also influence the way that I look at all other aspects of the media.
In relation to my advance portfolio work for A2 that I am currently completing, I have conducted a lot of research into the type of film trailers that I could complete and also how I can take various theories and apply them into my work. The research into theories in particular has helped me a lot in understanding the way in which film trailers are constructed. It is important to me that I fully understand these theories and ideologies so that I can incorporate them in an interesting way into my own work. I have particularly looked into a lot of narrative theory ideas so that i can present my ideas and story line in the best possible way so that the audience will be most intrigued by it. I have also looked at theories such as genre theory and individual ideas such as stereotypes and the creation of verisimilitude in particular genres. Understanding these key things is important when creating your own film trailer, which is why I did a lot of research into these particular areas. In regards to planning the film trailer that I am going to create, I have not yet started to put everything together, however I already know the ways that I am going to put it together and also how I am going to use my planning skill that I have gained from my foundation portfolio and incorporate it into the creation of my trailer. I am going to produce planning resources such as storyboards so that I will have the best chance at being prepared when it comes to the construction stage of my media production.
The skills that I have developed over the past 1-2 years have had a great influence on the way that I view certain types of media and also how I can deconstruct certain aspects to help me in my own work. Through using research and planning to help me with creative decisions, I have been able to greatly improve the detail of my work, producing the best possible pieces of media and also so that I can produce work that it is to a professional level and that I would be proud to present to lots of people.

Question 1b) - 27th November 2013
Q: Apply theories of narrative to one of your coursework productions.
I am going to look at the various theories that I have applied to my advanced portfolio because I think that the idea of narrative structure applies a lot to the work that I am currently creating for my film trailer. This is because I have had to deepen my understanding of the work that I am going to produce when it comes to structuring my film trailer.
As I have chosen to follow the drama genre and the idea of an 'Unlikely Friendship', I thought that it would be a good idea to generally follow the ideologies of Todorov, indicating the five - stage - structure to the narrative of a story. This consists of equilibrium, disruption of the equilibrium, recognition of the disruption, an attempt to repair the disruption, back to equilibrium. This structure follows a circular pattern that most films and drama films in particular tend to follow. It is important to understand the full extent of the theory as it enables the audience to fully engage and immerse themselves into the media and the film trailer in particular that they are watching. The idea of this theory is that everything starts off as being equal and the 'norms' that would generally be applied into everyday life to create a relatable environment for the audience. When the disruption of this norm comes into play, it is designed to through the audience off balance to leave them wondering what is going to happen. I am going to use this ideology in my own coursework production as it is a good way to get the audience involved in what is happening. Everything after the disruption of the equilibrium is essentially the road back to equilibrium. Todorov states that the equilibrium that is reached at the end is usually the same s the equilibrium that we are presented with at the beginning as a sort of, re-establishment of the previous equilibrium. Despite this, there are many films that would go against this idea that the same equilibrium is established. For example, action films are a good example of this such as the film True Lies, as the equilibrium at the end is different and slightly more evolved than the equilibrium that we are presented with in the first place. Along with Todorov's idea of this narrative structure, Roland Barthes suggests the use of signs and symbols to initiate the audience's understanding of what is happening. These codes and symbols that are implied, make the audience wonder what is going on and what might happen. I am also applying ideologies presented by Vladimir Propp so that I can have a good set of stock characters which is usually present in most films and therefore trailers. It's a good idea to include these basic stock characters so that there is a lot of variety within the actual film. It also means that there are going to be more characters that the audience can relate to. Within my own film trailer I am going to include features of Propp's narrative so that I get a good range of characters.
The idea of semiotics in film trailers is also important to understand in the narrative of a trailer because it indicates the signs and symbols that are present in a piece of media. The portrayal of binary opposites is the differences in signs and how they are negatively emphasised. An example of this type of binary opposite is the views put forward by Claude Levi - Strauss. He indicated that oppositions such as young/old, boy/girl and good/evil are all simple binary's that we can generally follow in a simple piece of media to create complex characters. Levi-Strauss also made a conclusive decision that one of the binary opposites for example female over male, is generally more valued over the other. This is important to think about in my own coursework production because I can include various forms of this idea to keep the audience wondering who each character is and who they represent.
Enigma codes work within the idea of narrative structure to keep the audience constantly guessing and wondering what is going to happen next. It is important to have a wide range of enigma codes so that the audience does not get bored and decides that they don't want to watch the film. A good enigma code that is widely used in film trailers is the cliff hanger. For years it has been one of the best ways of indicating narrative through an enigma code, which is why this is one of the techniques that I am could to include in my own coursework production.
All of these various ways of presenting narrative structure, are a good way of indicating the storyline to an audience. Through all the various techniques that I have talked about, I am going to use them throughout my own drama film trailer to get the audience wanting to watch the film that I am presenting in the trailer. All of the techniques that I have looked at and am going to use will hopefully gain a much wider audience.

Question 1a) - 27th November 2013
Q: Describe the ways in which your production work was informed by research into real media texts and how your ability to use such research has developed over time...
I am going to talk about the ways in which I have done various forms of research over both my AS and A2 years, using both primary and secondary methods. Through using both forms of research, I am able to get a much better understanding of audiences and how they would view a particular piece of media text. Based on the information I gather from both forms of research, I can conduct a detailed analysis into making the product the most appropriate for the target audience.
Firstly for my foundation portfolio that I created throughout my AS year, I had to conduct a great deal of research into finding out the types of magazine that were already out there and how I could create my own to fit in with the ever changing media market and also how I could create a unique product. When it came to actually thinking of an idea behind the type of magazine that I wanted to create I wanted to base the majority of my decisions around entering a niche type of market so that I could direct my magazine that I was going to create at a very specific audience. Once I had conducted an initial questionnaire on the type of magazine my target audience would like to see on the shelves (primary research), it was decided that I would produce a festival magazine, as there aren't any real magazines like this out there. After looking into more mainstream types of music magazines such as NME and Q, it was clear the type of layout and styles they decided to go with. I wanted to use this type of example because I thought that seeing as they were most popular, they would therefore have traits that would be useful in my own work. Through conducting this type of primary research I was able to gain a greater understanding of the types of audiences that would most likely be the ones to read the media text. Once I knew the type of audience I was going to be aiming my product at, I conducted another questionnaire (primary research) to develop my understanding of what the specific target audience would like to see. The responses I got from this helped me a great deal when it came to actually constructing the magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread. It helped me decide the overall colour scheme of the magazine and things such as fonts and layouts. In regards to secondary research, I thought that it would be a good idea to look at figures, regarding the types of people that would most likely want to buy my magazine. Even though I had already conducted my own research, I still thought that it would be a good idea to incorporate some outside ideologies so that I would have more of a range when it came to letting the creativeness flow in creating the magazine. All of this research has helped me develop the entire research skill so that I can conduct research in greater depth when it comes to researching for my film trailer production.
So far for my second year of media, I have began researching various forms of trailer so that I have gained a greater understanding of the types of films that people are most likely going to want to watch. I conducted an initial questionnaire (primary research), to find out the types of films that people of all ages are going to want to watch. After looking over the results, it was clear that a lot of the people that I had spoken to either preferred, drama, thriller, action or horror. It was clear that the majority of teenagers were more in favour of the horror genre which was expected after looking at the viewing figures for horror movies. Even so, the majority of the people that I questioned said that they would most likely be inclined to watch a drama film as there are many sub-genres to explore and a drama film can take on many different ideologies to draw in a wide range of audiences. After looking into each of the genres that the audience most preferred, I narrowed my specific target audience down to 18 - 25 year olds, mainly females. I thought that this would be a good audience to stick to as they have a wide range of opinions. After looking at the preferences for this target audience I have decided to go with a drama film as I think that they would be able to relate to the issues that are generally covered in these movies. I have looked a lot into the types of drama films that I could use for inspiration (secondary research), making sure that the majority of the films that I have looked at would match the type of film that I want to create. I have decided to take a deeper look into the works of 500 Days of Summer, The Great Gatsby and The Blind Side, as I thought that they showed the types of drama films that could be created and how the majority of them focus around the idea of some sort of friendship or relationship between two people. This deeper understanding of researching and understanding the different types of drama film trailers, has allowed me to think about how I could incorporate a variety of different techniques that are shown, into my own work.
Throughout the entirety of my A - Levels I think that I have developed my researching skill a great deal as I now know the different ways that I can gain valid and informative data on all of the things that I need to know. I feel like everything that I have done, has contributed a great deal when it comes to actually creating my own media work and without the knowledge that I have gained I may not have been able to create the professional work that I feel like I have produced throughout the entire year.

Analysing Media Representation in Last Year's Coursework
For my AS Media course, I created a front cover, contents page and double page spread for a music magazine of my choice. All of the ideas that I came up with were completely my own, with the way in which I was appealing to my audience being very unique due to my genre being 'female festival goers', which is a very niche area when it comes to marketing and distributing my media product. Despite mainly using my own ideas and design, I used various stereotypical techniques in creating my magazine in order to conform to normality. This is important because it makes it more likely for the audience to be drawn towards to product. These types of technique included the placement of titles along with the style and colour of the fonts depending on the audience that I was targeting. Everything that I used best appealed to my audience because of the way that everything looked.
The pinks and the whites were the main colours that I decided to use because I thought that they worked best with the overall theme that I was going for. Along with the fonts, I thought that they best represented the genre of the magazine along with the audience that I was aiming my product at. I tried my best to make it look like a professional piece of media and I think that it looks legitimate and definitely represents the genre along with the audience.
In terms of who my magazine was initially going to be aimed at, I automatically knew that I wanted to create something that would relate well to something that I like. Therefore the target audience had to be female so that I would know how to include certain things that females like, such as colours, language and texts that look most appealing. I also thought that it would be a good idea to appeal to a certain area of the media market that hasn't already been explored which is why I chose to go with the festival idea. As I'd never seen a festival based magazine on the shelves before I thought that it would be interesting to see if I could attempt to open up the idea and make it a reality.
When it came to actually creating the front cover I thought of all of the different representations we are used to seeing in the media. To me, the most common representation is that of women. Laura Mulvey's, Male Gaze theory, highlights how females are put in desirable positions in order to appeal to men. Even so this can work for women looking at other women too. For example, someone could look at a celebrity on the front of a magazine and think that they have an amazing figure and would start to begin to look up to them. With this in mind, I wanted to use a photo on the front cover that would appeal and relate to the audience of 16-21 year old festival goers and I think that the image I chose works very well with what I was trying to achieve.

The contents page and double page spread also relate to the different types of media representation because they both have very specific features that would appeal to my target audience. The representation of the main person in the magazine, is clearly one that would appeal to a lot of people, due to the fact that she is happy and that there is a lot going on surrounding her life. It is important to represent the person on the main pages, as someone who is admirable and who could relate well to the people I am aiming my product at.
In regards to media representation, I think that all of my pages that I created represent the genre and the audience very well and all have various techniques and ideologies that add to the conventions of a music magazine.
