Q: Describe how you developed research and planning skills for media production and evaluate how these skills contributed to creative decision making. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how these skills developed over time.
Over the past two years I have developed my research and planning skills in order to make creative and informative decisions based on the media product that I would be making. I have used various techniques that have allowed me to develop the process over a long period of time. All aspects of the research and planning that I have done, contributing to my final pieces of work have helped me greatly in understanding the vital factors that I need to include in my wok to make it suitable for the target audiences that I would be aiming my product at.
For my foundation portfolio in my AS year, a lot of research went into the overall design of the magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread, so that I could relate it to the best of my ability to some of the music magazines that were already out there. I new that I would have to look a lot into aspects such as colour schemes, layout, fonts and texts and various languages that I would have to imply into my work. I had to make sure that it all fit together in an interesting and unique way. In order to make the majority of these creative decisions I would have to have completed some research in the field, to make sure that I knew what sort of themes I would need to use. This particular research skill that I have gained whilst finding out information regarding these factors, has developed over a long period of time, as I began to research further into the creative side of music magazines. These factors are the same when it came to planning. I knew that when it came to planning how I as going to put together my magazine, I would have to have a good understanding of how to plan, which is why there was a lot of trial and error involved when it came to planning and piecing together my magazine. Planning aspects such as skeleton layouts, meant that I could have a basic idea of what I was going to do whilst also having a lot of control over the things that I could change. Despite this, the planning stages of my magazine contributed to the creative decision making involved in the production as the rough idea of what I was going to do allowed me to use the research that I had gathered, looking at the preferences of my target audience, and influence the various aspects of my magazine in different ways. I think that both the research and planning side of this particular media production, allowed me to let my creativeness come through whilst also sticking to what the target audience is looking for. I also think that the skills that I gained whilst creating and researching this area of the media has helped me for future reference if I ever need to create something similar again. This is important because it will also influence the way that I look at all other aspects of the media.
In relation to my advance portfolio work for A2 that I am currently completing, I have conducted a lot of research into the type of film trailers that I could complete and also how I can take various theories and apply them into my work. The research into theories in particular has helped me a lot in understanding the way in which film trailers are constructed. It is important to me that I fully understand these theories and ideologies so that I can incorporate them in an interesting way into my own work. I have particularly looked into a lot of narrative theory ideas so that i can present my ideas and story line in the best possible way so that the audience will be most intrigued by it. I have also looked at theories such as genre theory and individual ideas such as stereotypes and the creation of verisimilitude in particular genres. Understanding these key things is important when creating your own film trailer, which is why I did a lot of research into these particular areas. In regards to planning the film trailer that I am going to create, I have not yet started to put everything together, however I already know the ways that I am going to put it together and also how I am going to use my planning skill that I have gained from my foundation portfolio and incorporate it into the creation of my trailer. I am going to produce planning resources such as storyboards so that I will have the best chance at being prepared when it comes to the construction stage of my media production.
The skills that I have developed over the past 1-2 years have had a great influence on the way that I view certain types of media and also how I can deconstruct certain aspects to help me in my own work. Through using research and planning to help me with creative decisions, I have been able to greatly improve the detail of my work, producing the best possible pieces of media and also so that I can produce work that it is to a professional level and that I would be proud to present to lots of people.
